We are proud to announce that from early October we will be offering a selection of original work by marine artist Anthony Blackman. 
 
Renowned for his maritime paintings in both the UK and USA Anthony's work rarely comes onto the market as most of his paintings are held in private collections around the world. The paintings listed are exclusive to the Maritime Gallery and are not available through any other outlet.
 
Anthony's recent exhibitions include; The Texas Seaport Museum International Festival of Maritime Art, The Pearl Fincher Museum in Houston and in 2009 the prestigious Royal Society of Marine Artists' Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.  
Early Kent map C1833
 
Rare early steel engraved map of Kent by Hoare & Reeves and published by J Duncan around 1833. The full title is 'Map of the County of Kent; Divided into Hundreds'. The sub-title reads 'Containing the District Divisions and other Local Arrangements effected by the Reform Bill'. A super map extensively detailed. 
 
The picture has some original outline colour and apart from some very minor foxing is in good condition. Size of engraved area 430mm x 350mm.

Early copper plate engraving of a battle during the Anglo Dutch Wars of 1672. Published by R Bowyer between 1793 and 1806 for David Hume's 'The History of England'.  Engraved by Rhodes from an original painting by Cleveley the picture is dated 1797. A wonderful maritime scene. 
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, is in good condition. Size of engraved area 170mm x 130mm excluding ornate border.

Super copper plate engraving of the Siege of Gibraltar a battle between the combined forces of Spain and France against the British during the American War of Independence. The picture was drawn by Smirke, engraved by A Smith and published by J Stratford in London in 1810.

Stunning steel engraving published between 1860-83 of Ramsgate in Kent. The picture was engraved by T A Prior from an original drawing by G H Andrews. Super view of the harbour entrance showing the lighthouse with the town in the background, sailing ships and people milling around on the harbour wall.
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, has some light foxing, mainly noticeable to the borders and a couple of other marks etc as you would expect from a picture of this size and age. Price does reflect condition. Size of engraved area 410mm x 210mm.

Quite a rare copper plate engraving of the parade, West Cowes on the Isle of Wight by George Brannon. Published in London February 1821 by Brannon the picture was sold by booksellers on the Island.     
 
The picture has some very minor staining/discolouration mainly to the borders but generally in good condition. Size of engraved area  200mm x 120mm.

Quite a rare copper plate engraving of the parade, West Cowes on the Isle of Wight by George Brannon. Published in London February 1821 by Brannon the picture was sold by booksellers on the Island.
Prospect of Inverness, Scotland 1693.
 
Scarce early copper plate engraving titled 'Prospectus Civitatis Innerness- The Prospect of ye Town of Innerness'. the view shows the South side of St Andrews Inverness Scotland with the River Eden in the background. Engraved by John Slezer this engraving comes from his best known work 'Theatrum Scotiae which was published in 1693, a rare print.
 
John Slezer was a Dutch or German born engineer and artist who arrived in Scotland in 1669, he was later arrested and imprisoned in 1688 for his sympathies towards King James V11. 
 
The picture has some light brown staining around the border from a previous matting but generally in good order for its age. Folds as issued. Size of engraved area 405mm x 260mm.

Scarce copper plate engraving of showing the 'Station of the Ships in Port Praya Bay when the engagement began between Com G Johnstone & M'de Suffrien'. The battle took place during the American Revolutionary Wars on the 6th April 1781 with the British Squadron lead by George Johnstone and the the French Squadron by Bailli de Suffrien. Published in the Gent Magazine around 1790.
 
Some of the British fleet shown in the plan includes H.M.S Rattlesnake, Porpoise, Mercury, Active, Monmouth, Diana, Isis, Fortitude, Osterly, Quuen, Lock etc. 
 
The plan is a little grubby around the borders but generally in good order. Folds as issued. Size of engraved area 250mm x 155mm.

Super picture of an anchor being forged and the bellows keeping the furnace hot. As with the ship plans below an interesting piece of naval history.

Superb original limited edition 9/250 etching by Paul Bisson of 'Rowing Boats, Greenwich'  could be the Curlew Rowing Club which is based in Greenwich.. The picture probably dates from around 2000 and has a very atmospheric feel about it with the boats ready to be launched on the River Thames. Paul Bisson was born in Guernsey, in the Channel Islands in 1938 and studied at the St Martin's School of Art and between 1959 -1961 at the Royal Academy School.
 
The picture has a few very minor grubby marks around the border all which will mount out, otherwise in excellent condition. Size of image 140mm x 120mm.

The picture was published by the Gainsborough Galleries in Liverpool in 1920 and has an embossed artist's proof stamp bottom right. P.H. Huggill studied at the Royal College of Art 1908 -1914 and exhibited 12 times at the Royal Academy. Super view of tugs tied up and the Liver Building which will look stunning mounted and framed.
 
The picture has a brown stain around the outer border from a previous mount but this will not be visible once it is re-matted and framed. Otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 250mm x 200mm.

Rare early aquatint ' Moors on board Swiftsure' engraved by J C Stadler after an original drawing by Cooper Willyams. The picture is dated 1801. H.M.S. The picture, which has later hand colouring, has a reinforced centre fold as issued and some slight creasing as you would expect from a picture of this age. Otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 330m x 230mm.

The Cutty Sark off Beachy Head by John Steven Dews, signed 1979 

Stunning signed limited edition print by John Steven Dews 94/250. The tea cutter Cutty Sark was composite built in 1869 at Dumbarton for Captain John Wills a London ship owner. Renowned for her record breaking passages on the Australian wool trade routes under Captain Woodget she has spent her last years on display in Greenwich, where sadly she suffered severe fire damage and is currently under restoration.
 
John Steven Dews was born in Yorkshire in 1949 and has become one of the country's leading maritime artists with his last oil painting selling for £120,000. His prints are well sought after and avidly collected worldwide. This picture was part of the Amoco Heritage Collection of twelve marine paintings produced in 1979. 
 
The picture is in excellent condition, image size 760mm x 510mm.
