| Algier by Mattaus Merian 1646
Early copper plate engraved map of Algier in Africa by Mattaus Merian published in Frankfurt around 1646. The picture gives a birds eye view of the city and its fortifications.
The picture does has some light creasing as you would expect from an engraving of this age, central fold as issued. Size of engraved area 340mm x 220mm.

Plan of the Camp of Tarragona Spain C1745
Early Isaac Basire copper plate engraved map of 'Plan of the Camp of Tarragona' in the historical region of Catalonia in Spain. The map was produced for Mr Tindal's Continuation of Mr Rapkin's History of England around 1745.
The map shows the cities of Tarragona, Reus, La Silva and Alcouva and also shows that the hills marked with a cross are impracticable for cavalry.
The map, which is hand coloured, has folds as issued but also a join. The join has been expertly undertaken and looks more like a fold than an actual join. If you enlarge the screen image it runs vertically through the left hand ship. Otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 460mm x 360mm.

Thessaly, Greece 1805
Copper plate engraved map of Thessaly by J D Barbie du Bocage. The map featuring mainland Greece and the Islands of Euboea, Skiathos and Skopelos was engraved by J Russell, probably for Jean-Jacques Barthelemy's Travels of Anacharsis. Published by J Mawman in Poultry, London July 1805.
The map, which is hand coloured, has a central fold as issued and is slightly grubby around the borders, otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 320mm x 220mm.

Early copper plate engraved map ' A new and accurate map of France from the latest improvements and regulated by astronomical observations'. The map by Thomas Bowen dates from around 1790 and comes from Banke's new and complete system of geography.

Very early copper plate engraved map of Lorraine, France by Petrus Bertius from the French publication Thresor des Cartes 1602. The map names many towns such as Nancy, Metz, Youl, Raen, Bellmont, Thionville and Espiral it also has a scale of distances at the bottom.

5th Chart of the Coast of France 1793
Early copper plate map showing ' 5th Chart of the coast of France from Feecamp to Cape Barfleur' The map was published by W Faden in London in October 1793. The map shows the Normandy coastline from Barfleur through to Feecamp. The map, which has later hand colouring, has a small paper loss just above the 'E' in Channel, this is not a hole in the paper just the loss of the top surface, otherwise in very good condition. Goree Island, West Africa, Mallet C1683
Very early copper plate map of 'Goree Island, Senegal West Africa from Allain Mallet's 'Description I'Universe', published in France in 1683. Goree Island is one of 19 communes of the City of Dakar, Senegal and for many years one of the locations where slaves were processed and transported from. The upper map shows the location of the island just off Cape Verde.
The map, which has later hand colouring, is in good condition. Size of engraved area 140m x 100mm.

Early copper plate map showing a plan of the Bay of Ternay (Ternai) on the coast of the Sea of Japan Eastern Russia. The map comes from 'A Voyage around the World' published in 1798 by GG & J Robinson in London. The bay was discovered by La Perouse, a French navigator who had missed out on claiming Australia for France by a few hours to Captain Cook. The plan shows the locations of La Perouse's frigates Boussole and Astrolabe. An important map.
The map, which has later hand colouring, is in very good condition. Size of engraved area 360m x 240mm.

Rare early folding copper plate map ' Chart of the discoveries made in the Atlantic Ocean in the vessel Resolution by Captain Cook 1775'. French map engraved by Benard around 1785 showing the Isle of Georgia in the South Atlantic.
The map, which has later hand colouring, has some creasing and is close trimmed to the right hand border. There is also a slight tear in the right hand border, very common on folding maps. Size of engraved area 330m x 320mm.

Very early rare copper plate map of Jamaica dating from around 1676 probably engraved by Charles Lamb. The map has text on the reverse, titled 'The description of the New Netherlands, now called New York'. I believe it changed to New York around 1670.
The map is hand coloured, could be contemporary with the picture but it is hard to tell. Slightly grubby around the border and a little discoloured with some text showing through. Size of engraved area 120m x 80mm.
