Very rare astronomical chart 'Theorica Latitudinum'. This chart was purchased as a loose leaf from an American dealer who trades in rare books and early engravings and the following information is based on his research. From an edition of 'In Sphaeram Loannis de Sacro Bosco Commentarius' by Christophori Clavii, probably the 1581 edition published in Rome.
Christoph Clavius (1538-1612) was a German Jesuit astronomer and mathematician and the inventor of the Gregorian calendar.
The chart is printed on fine paper has a small hole on the right hand side and is creased, as you would expect from an engraving of this age. Size of sheet 140mm x 110mm.

Superb early copper plate map 'Plan of the Road and Harbour of Leghorn with the Adjacent Coast. Surveyed by order of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, by Thomas Young Officer in the Tuscan Navy'. Published in 1793 by William Faden in Charing Cross London. William Faden was Geographer to His Majesty and the Prince of Wales. His work is of very high quality and much sought after. He was chosen to produce the very first Ordanance Survey, a map of Kent in 1801. The map shows the coast of Italy and details Livorno, the Fort of Antignano, Madona de Monte Nero, Stagno, St Pietro in Grado plus a number of important rivers.

Shot Mill, Waterloo C1830
Steel engraving of 'The New Shot Mill near Waterloo Bridge', London. Engraved by John Hinchcliff from an original drawing by Thomas Shepherd the picture dates from around 1830. The mill was situated just South of Waterloo Bridge and was built for making the shot used in guns. The actual shot was made in the melting chamber at the top of the 120 foot tower. It was then dropped from the tower into the water below and by the time it reached the water had hardened and formed into a perfect ball of shot. On the site now stands the Hayward Gallery.

Early copper plate map of 'Views on the Coast of Kamtschatka', Siberia Russia. Engraved for Anderson's edition of Captain Cook's Voyages and published by Alex Hogg in London in 1785. The upper picture shows the entrance to Awatska, the middle the entrance to Awatska Bay and the lower a view in the entrance of Awatska Bay when the lighthouse on the North Head bore SE by S, distance 2 miles. These views were taken by members of Captain Cook's third voyage during their visit to Kamtschatka following his death in Hawaii.
The chart, which has later hand colouring, has some creasing but generally is in good condition. Size of engraved area 350mm x 210mm.
