Sketch of the Harbour of Samganooda on the Island of Oonalaska 1785 Rare early copper plate map from the Official British publication of Cook's Third Voyage 1785. Both Cook's ships on this voyage, the Resolution and the Discovery, were badly in need of repairs so he headed for Unalaska (Aleutians) and the harbour of Samgoonada where the ship's carpenters took 3 weeks undertake the necessary work. During his enforced stay in Sanganooda Captain Cook charted the harbour taking depth soundings and drawing the harbour topography. Christmas Island was discovered by Captain James Cook in the ships Resolution and Discovery on December 24, 1777. Named because they spent their Christmas there.
