Anthony Blackman

Anthony Blackman's interest in maritime painting was spawned by the influences and activities relating to the River Thames off his home-town of Gravesend and observing life on the river. The river life was fascinating to him and at an early age he was sketching ships and local river scenes. He spent his early student days at Gravesend School of Art where he developed his interests, which later influenced his decision to specialise in marine painting.
Anthony's recent exhibitions include; The Texas Seaport Museum International Festival of Maritime Art, The Pearl Fincher Museum in Houston and in 2009 the prestigious Royal Society of Marine Artists' Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.

The battleship 'Texas' Coming Home
The battleship USS Texas- BB35 'Coming home'. Laid down in 1911 the USS Texas was the most powerful battleship in the world. Commissioned in 1914 she saw action in two World Wars.
The ship was donated to the State of Texas and is berthed at the San Jacinto Battleground National Park, Houston, Texas. She is now a Museum ship. The painting depicts her homecoming after World War 2. The original painting by Anthony is now in Houston, Texas in the collection of Max Teare. A stunning picture.
Anthony has worked on many paintings depicting the USS Texas in both watercolour and oils.

'Elissa' Running Free
Elissa is a fully restored, three masted barque, owned by the Galveston Historical Society and berthed at the Texas Seaport Museum , Galveston, Texas, USA. Anthony has sailed in the Elissa many times over the years and has produced collections of paintings featuring this ship. He was made an honorary Citizen of Galveston in 1984 and was Galveston Artist in Residence in 2006. His paintings are highly sought after in Texas.
The original oil painting is in the collection of Mr John Moran and was painted in 1985.
